Thousands plunged into darkness as major power cut hits city centre

Parts of Liverpool's city centre are in complete darkness as a wide spread powercut hits the city centre.

Homes and businesses in L1 and L8 have no electricity this evening after a power cut.

SP Energy Networks said they had no advance warning of the black out which they became aware of at around 6pm.

Footage shows homes on Hope Street in complete darkness, with street lights also not working.

The power cut is also causing issues to trains, with Merseyrail being forced to start trains from Moorfields due to power supply problems.

Liverpool ECHO reporter Lottie Gibbons said the platform at Moorfields train station was 'chaos' as Kirkby trains are cancelled and Ormskirk and Southport lines are delayed.

A spokesperson from SP Energy Networks said: "There is a power cut affecting the L1 and L18 postcode areas of Liverpool.

"We had no advance warning of this and only became aware of it at 6:01pm.

"Our control centre will attempt to reset the network remotely to restore power in stages, and we will also send our next available engineer to attend site.

"Once they arrive, or when we receive any update regarding the cause, we will be able to provide you with more information.

"We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience."
