Thousands of tourists were left disappointed today as workers at the Louvre in Paris suddenly walked out.

The museum tweeted this morning that the "exceptional closure" was expected to last for the rest of the day.

In a statement the Sud Culture Solidaires union said: "The Louvre is suffocating", adding that staff members have noticed a "deterioration in conditions for visitors and workers".

The Louvre said on Twitter: "Due to a recent increase in visitor numbers, members of the Musée du Louvre’s Reception and Security staff are exercising their right to strike.

"The museum will therefore remain closed all day today."

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding." the museum added.

A number of customers posted images of huge queues outside the museum on Monday morning as they were forced to wait before being suddenly turned away.

The Louvre is expected to be open again on Tuesday.
