Thousands of Tesco Clubcard holders alerted after passwords stolen

Tesco has had to contact more than 600,000 of its Clubcard holders following a data attack which has let fraudsters steal password and username combinations.

The supermarket giant said it "become aware of fraudulent activity" around the redemption of vouchers that customers earn when they reach certain points levels, reports Mirror Online .

The company has contacted around 620,000 of its Clubcard holders after learning of the breach. However, Tesco says no personal financial information has been compromised.

A spokesman for the supermarket said: We have strict security measures in place and our priority is protecting our customers," she added. "Our internal systems picked this up quickly and we immediately took steps to protect our customers and restrict access to their accounts.

"At no point was any customer’s financial data accessed.

"We believe that someone has stolen password/username combinations from other website(s) and used them to try to access Tesco sites - where customers used the same username and password.

"We have asked customers affected to reset their passwords and are contacting customers whose Clubcard vouchers may have been affected to let them know that we will replace these vouchers and issue new Clubcards, as a precaution. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause."

Clubcard holders took to social media to speak of their shock after discovering they had been hit by scammers.

One person said: "Somebody has hacked my Tesco Clubcard points. It’s a mad world."
