Thousands of suspected illegal cigarettes seized from Benwell shops

This is the haul of suspected illegal cigarettes sniffed out by tobacco dogs in the Newcastle's West End.

Almost 10,000 cigarettes and more than 4kg of hand-rolling tobacco were seized from three Benwell shops on May 2.

Newcastle City Council's commitment to the regional "Keep it Out" campaign saw sniffer dogs Scamp and Yo-Yo uncover the goods with an estimated street value of £3,500.

Councillor Nick Kemp, cabinet member for environment for the authority, said: “These remarkable sniffer dogs have once again proved their worth by landing another blow to this illegal operation which continues to put people’s health at risk.

Officers with Newcastle City Council made the seizure of suspected illegal cigarettes from three shops in Benwell (Newcastle City Council)

“The specially-trained dogs are a great asset, but whether we have them at our disposal or not we will never stop in our efforts to stop criminals flooding our streets with their unregulated products.

“Illegal tobacco causes young people to become addicted and their health will suffer as a result. It has links to organised crime and it will never be acceptable in our city.

“My thanks go to our hard-working Trading Standards officers who continue to tackle the issue alongside our partners.”

Anyone with information on the sale of illegal tobacco can anonymously report it to the Keep It Out campaign on 0300 999 0000 or at keep-it-out.co.uk
