Thousands of strange creatures found washed up on beach

Thousands of bizarre animals have washed up on a Welsh beach in the aftermath of Storm Dennis.

The shelled creatures were found on Cefn Sidan beach in Pembrey on Wednesday morning (February 19).

Staff at the country park said they had never seen the creatures before and added they covered the beach for miles, Wales Online reports.

It has since been confirmed the creatures are actually lutraria lutraria, known commonly as otter shells and are part of the mollusc family.

They usually live buried deep in the sand but the recent turbulent weather is thought to have washed them ashore.

A spokesperson for Pembrey Country Park said: "We are aware of thousands of lutraria lutraria, common otter shells, that have appeared on Cefn Sidan Beach.

"This is a result of the recent storms. It is likely that the off-shore sandbanks that they inhabited has been washed away."
