Thousands of South Lanarkshire pupils sent home to self isolate in past month

Nearly 2000 South Lanarkshire school pupils have been sent home to self-isolate in the past month, new figures have revealed.

South Lanarkshire Council released the stats earlier today.

They show a total of 1999 youngsters were told to self-isolate due to the coronavirus, with 375 positive cases recorded.

In neighbouring North Lanarkshire a total of 2,000 pupils were sent home with 200 positive results, according to the Herald newspaper.

Earlier this week First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirmed that Lanarkshire will remain in the tier 3 category, but did not rule out a move to tier 4 in the future.

The Reformer reported earlier this month that teaching unions in Lanarkshire have called for a return to blended learning, with some pupils taught from home, if the case numbers worsened.

Local association secretary Andy Harvey said: "Head teachers and teachers have been working night and day with South Lanarkshire Council to make schools safe. But with class sizes of up to 33, it is an anxious time, particularly for front-line teachers who are pregnant and those with underlying health issues. If we go to tier four, blended learning must be considered.”
