Thousands of small charities in Wales to be given £10,000 after coronavirus lockdown hits their income

More than 2,000 charities in Wales will be given £10,000 to help them through the coronavirus crisis.

Many charities have been under real financial pressure since the lockdown came in. Not only has there been an increased demand for their services but also their ability to fund raise has been significantly diminished.

The money will come from a £10,000 "business support grant" to help them respond to the financial challenges of Covid-19.

It is understood that the measures will be outlined by finance minister Rebecca Evans in her press conference later today.

This new £26m package is an extension to the existing Covid-19 grants scheme announced last month and will support an additional 2,600 properties in the retail, leisure and hospitality sector, with a rateable value of £12,000 or below.

This includes charity run shops, sports premises and community centres which, until now, have not been eligible for this type of support.

Some charities had previously been critical of the Welsh Government with Welsh Women's aid accusing them of allocating no new money to support refuges who have a seen surge in demand since the lockdown began.
