Thousands of shoppers descend on city centre on last weekend before Christmas

Liverpool city centre was packed with thousands of people on the last weekend before Christmas.

With the big day only a week away, many shoppers have ventured into the city centre on Sunday to pick up some last minute presents. People were pictured carrying shopping bags from the likes of the LEGO store, John Lewis and New Look, while others wore Christmas jumpers and a Santa suit.

Traffic monitoring site Inrix reported delays on roads around the city centre due to Christmas shopping this afternoon. Hundreds of cars were pictured queuing on the Strand on Sunday and heavy traffic was also reported on Edge Lane.

A yellow weather warning for ice was issued by the Met Office for Merseyside today, which could cause travel disruption. A Level 3 Cold Weather Alert is also in force from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) for all of England until midnight tonight.

Despite the cold conditions, many shoppers still turned out to brave the weather this afternoon, with some wearing shorts and sliders.

Traffic chaos was also reported across the city on Saturday as car parks became gridlocked with cars. Eileen Felton was among the ECHO readers who were caught up in the chaos yesterday. She said: "It was absolutely horrendous trying to get through the centre."

Becca Grace said: "It was chocker. It took us one hour 45 minutes to get from the university to St John car park which was full. It was only letting people in two out two in. Never seen anything like it."

Stephanie Roberts said: "My husband had to leave his car in Mount Pleasant car park because it was rammed getting it out. They had police attempting to control traffic but it was a joke."

Kizzy Dooley said: "I was stuck in the middle of it. Traffic pure gridlocked. Took 25 minutes to get from bus stop at Liverpool ONE to Lewis."

Melanie Williams Pre Denton said: "We sat for over two hours in Q-Park Liverpool ONE trying to get out."
