Thousands of Scots unable to holiday this summer after changes to passport rules

Scots could be unable to jet abroad once lockdown ends due to changes in passport rules.

Holidaymakers are being urged to check the date on their passport if they are heading off abroad this year.

Travel firms are ramping up preparations to begin holidays abroad once again.

Now, TUI and Ryanair, as well as Easyjet and Jet2, will be resuming flights.

But travel expert Simon Calder has warned millions of people might find that their passport isn't valid after the government warned Brits to not renew.

The current advice states: "It is taking longer than the usual 3 weeks to process applications because of coronavirus (COVID-19).

"Do not apply unless you need a passport urgently for compassionate reasons, for example if a family member has died, or for government business."

Some countries - like Egypt, Turkey and Thailand, as well as China - need Brits to have at least six months on a passport.

On the government website, it advises: "Do not book travel until you have a valid passport - doing so is at your own risk.

"Your new passport will not have the same number as your old one."

A Home Office spokeswoman said: “Her Majesty’s Passport Office continues to process standard passport applications, but they are taking longer than usual as a result of changed working practices designed to keep both staff and customers safe.

“We would encourage those who can to apply at a later date and, as is always the case, we strongly advise not to book travel without a valid passport.”
