Thousands of Scots sign up to 'Clap for Nicola' next week as the FM celebrates her 50th birthday

Scots are being asked to join in a 'Clap for Nicola Sturgeon' next week, to celebrate the First Minister's 50th birthday.

An event online has seen hundreds of people sign up to applaud on July 19 at 8pm, to thank Nicola Sturgeon for her handling of the coronavirus pandemic as well as to celebrate her big birthday.

Similar claps have taken place throughout lockdown for the NHS and other key workers to show appreciation of their efforts on the front line.

Now however, calls have been made for the same to happen for Nicola Sturgeon as Scotland continues to ease out of lockdown.

Organiser Siobhan McCann posted on Facebook: "Our First Minister has done an exceptional job throughout what's been a strange year so far, to say the least

We clapped for our fantastic NHS. We even clapped for Boris at some point (why, I’m not quite sure).

"Let’s give Nicola the 'full regalia' on her 50th birthday, Sunday 19th July at 8pm."

Nearly 4,000 have said they will clap, with another 13,000 expressing an interest on Facebook.

Siobhan added: "Get the pipes and pans oot and cheer once more for oor Nicola! And let’s make sure Westminster hear us!"

Today the First Minister announced that Scotland will move into phase three of the lockdown route map from tomorrow, with a host of new measures to be allowed.
