Thousands of Scots order pints and cocktails from Motherwell pub during lockdown

Thousands of punters are refusing to let lockdown ruin the beer garden weather by having pints and cocktails delivered to their door.

The Woodcutter bar in Motherwell is taking orders as usual - with a twist, as they bring the pub treats for just £6 to the comfort of Scots homes.

It comes as the Coronavirus pandemic forces the country indoors closing bars and restuarants.

But now pub owner Chris McDiff, 27, and girlfriend Rebecca Cook, 22, from Bellshill have been left blown away by the success of the booze takeaway service.

The pair are working behind the bar themselves to keep strict social distance measures in place as ‘the phone rings off the hook’.

Chris said: “I just bought the place over and had the idea.

“A few of the customers had said they were missing the cocktails we had started doing, especially with the weather we have now, so I thought why don’t we try and deliver.

“I thought it be a couple of the regulars but at one point I had 3,000 mails in one day from people asking about the service.

“The phone never stopped ringing off the hook, we couldn’t believe it.”

Chris had been panicking about mortgage payments on the property as business came to a grinding halt over the Covid-19 crisis.

He had just become Motherwell's youngest pub landlord in December 2019 and was excited about the future of the Woodcutter.

Now customers are desperate to get their hands on the strawberry daiquiri and more, his biggest obstacle now is trying to get enough ingredients for the menu.

Chris added: “The stuff isn’t lasting because we are using it all up so fast.

“Supermarkets are restricting what you can buy as well so we can’t do a normal stock up.

“So because of that and the fact it’s just us behind the bar we are just doing weekends at the minute, but hopefully we will do more days soon.”
