Thousands of Scots homes left without heating on coldest day of year as sub-zero conditions hit

Thousands of Falkirk homes have no gas or heating as the ice-cold winter weather bites.

Around 8000 homes in Carronshore, Larbert, Skinflats and Stenhousemuir are without heating on one of the coldest days of the year after a fault at a gas governor, say energy firm SGN.

Some social media users claim they have been without gas from at least 6.30am this morning as temperatures drop well below freezing across the country.

As we move into December, the Met Office stated the ice-cold conditions hit minus four degrees in Falkirk this morning.

Angry social media users expressed their frustration. One said: "Frankly, it's pretty poor the gas being off since at least 6.30am."

A Twitter user continued: "Well as usual in a crisis the information provided is lacking and conflicting."

Another called for the information to be shared as "the elderly may not have Internet or anyone to rely on for information, employed carers might not know what is going on either" adding "it's terrible to think they may be alone and freezing cold with no info."

Scottish Gas Network confirmed the fault is affecting 8,000 homes in the area, and engineers are on site.

In their latest statement, the company added: "This issue is affecting many, but not all, properties within the FK2 and FK5 postcode areas.

"We have engineers on site and we’ll be opening a customer incident centre in the local community in the next few hours."

SGN explain that the governor is a piece of equipment that regulates pressure in our gas network, ensuring the gas reaching your home is at the correct pressure.

Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen hit a brutal minus four on the coldest night of the year so far.

Temperatures dipped across the country last night with Tyndrum near Stirling recording a reading of -9ºC.

Tulloch Bridge in Fort William was the coldest part of the country last night, reaching a arctic -9.6ºC.
