Thousands of sand castles built on Barry Island for world record attempt

Thousands of sand castles were built along Barry Island as part of a world record attempt.

Hundreds of people descended on the popular beach to try and make a connected line of 2,000 sandcastles.

After hours of work with each castle carefully made to fit the specific rules, the massive line was finished and the record was smashed.

The event was organised by the Beautiful Barry group, who planned the record attempt to celebrate their Facebook page reaching 5,000 members.

The attempt started at around 11am with the plan to build sand castles in groups of 10 to make sure each one is perfect.

Keen castle builders were told not to bring their own bucket, as the organisers said they must be a specific size and shape.

The Beautiful Barry group, who were behind the attempt, said their target was 2,000 which would easily beat the current record of 1,924.

They ended up making 2,044 sandcastles by the end of the attempt.

Part of the rules from Guinness World Records was that the line could have corners, but it wasn't able to cross over itself.

Some of the other rules were that each sand castle must be a certain height and have four turrets, with each one touching the castle next to it.

If there were any breaks in the line the record would not count.
