Thousands of Record readers call for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to be stripped of their Dumbarton titles

Thousands of Record readers have called for Prince Harry and his wife Meghan to be stripped of their royal Dumbarton titles.

We polled our Facebook followers and asked 'should Harry and Meghan still be Earl and Countess of Dumbarton if they leave the UK?'

More than 3200 people said no. Only 880 of those who responded thought they should be allowed to hold on to their prestigious Scottish titles.

They use the titles while in Scotland, rather than their Sussex titles.

Many also left comments to make their feelings absolutely clear.

Tracy McNally said: "No, no, no, no, no. Absolutely not."

Gordon Herd added: "If they want separation from the Royal Family then they should give up the titles."

Cailean M Moore said: "If they leave the Royal family, they should also leave behind their titles, residences and privileges."

However Div McGibbon said: "It's Dumbarton, it's not as if it's going to make a difference whether they leave or not."

Harry and Meghan Markle announced plans to step back from their roles as senior members of the royal family, base themselves in 'Canada' and work to become financially independent on Wednesday.

In a statement issued on Instagram Harry – the grandson of Queen Elizabeth – said: "After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution.

"We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."

The couple's move follows weeks of speculation about their future after they took a six-week break in Canada over the festive period in the wake of an emotional appearance in a documentary.
