Thousands of people sign petition demanding Alastair Stewart is reinstated

Thousands of people have signed a petition calling for Alastair Stewart to be reinstated back on ITV.

On Wednesday, the 67-year-old announced that he was stepping down following "errors of judgement" in his use of social media.

The News at Ten presenter in a statement said: "It was a misjudgement which I regret, but it's been a privilege to bring the news to households throughout the UK for the past 40 years."

It has not been confirmed what the exact 'misjudgement' was, however the broadcaster's Twitter account has been deleted.

Change.org account user 'Justice for the Injustice' created the petition, which at the time of writing has 19,063 signatures with a target of 25,000.

On the announcement, Michael Jermey, director of news and current affairs at ITV, said: "Alastair has been a long-standing, familiar figure to viewers of ITV News, both reporting and presenting with distinction. We wish him the very best for the future."

ITN's chief executive Anna Mallett added: "We would like to recognise Alastair's contribution as one of the UK's foremost journalists and TV presenters and to thank him for his commitment to delivering high-quality broadcast news over many years."

He served three years with Channel 4 News and then went on to become a main newsreader with ITV news.

Broadcasting colleagues have spoken out in support of the presenter, including ITV's political editor, Ranvir Singh, and fellow newsreader Mary Nightingale, who described him as a 'good friend and mentor'.
