Thousands of people have their say on whether Nottingham should go into lockdown

A survey of thousands of Nottinghamshire Live readers showed the majority think the area should be subject to a local lockdown.

The county's fate is expected to be decided  later on Monday as Prime Minister Boris Johnson will announce which restrictions will be imposed by the Government on areas with surging infection rates.

In a poll, we asked readers 'do you agree with Nottingham going into lockdown?' and a total of 14,743 people responded

A total of 9,444 people voted that Nottingham should go into lockdown and 5,299 people said that restrictions should not be tightened.

In a statement to the House of Commons, the PM will announce details of the new three-tier system which could force pubs and restaurants to shut in the country's worst-affected areas.

As of Sunday, October 11, there have been a total of 5,658 cases throughout the pandemic in Nottingham, according to the Government's data.

Nottingham's infection rate has now topped 750 Covid cases per 100,000 people, data released on Friday showed.

A Nottingham lockdown has now been on the cards for a week after the city became the worst affected area in the country for coronavirus.

But there has been controversy over the delay with MP for Nottingham South Lilian Greenwood saying last week that the government "should be acting quickly to try and get the rise in infection under control".

And Nottinghamshire MPs have spoken out about the possibility of a county-wide lockdown.

Lee Anderson, Conservative MP for Ashfield, said residents should "should not be penalised" for a soaring R rate in the city centre.

Student areas of the city are some of the hardest hit by the virus and today the University of Nottingham announced that it has more than than 1,500 'active cases' of Covid-19.
