Thousands of Home Group customers warned over data after "potential vulnerability" found

A housing association is reassuring thousands of its customers that their personal details are safe after a potential data "vulnerability" was found.

Newcastle-based Home Group said the issue came to light last week and it "acted quickly" to warn the customers affected.

Bosses have made it clear that no data was stolen or leaked but a potential vulnerability was identified which was "quickly closed".

The group notified its customers about the matter, which it says was resolved within 90 minutes of being identified.

John Hudson, chief financial officer at Home Group, said: "At Home Group we take the safety and security of our customers extremely seriously.

"We were made aware of a potential data vulnerability and immediately responded to and resolved the issue. This affected a very small proportion of customers and did not include any financial data.

"We have a robust incident response protocol in place to deal with situations such as this, which meant the vulnerability was identified and fixed extremely quickly.

"We have contacted all customers affected and I want to reassure all our customers that their information is secure at Home Group and that we follow strict guidelines and protocols when it comes to data sharing and cybersecurity."

Home Group, which has a turnover of more than £360m, provides new homes as well as houses for rent for more than 100,000 people in around the UK.
