Thousands of Greggs fans tune in to watch live stream of oven as stores reopen

A 24 minute video of a Greggs oven being filled with sausage rolls and steak bakes that then get baked to a perfect golden brown has been watched by thousands of fans.

With 800 bakeries reopening across the country on Thursday, the live stream of cooking pastries proved a surprise viral hit for the chain - with 1,500 people reacting to it and more than 800 comments on Facebook in less than an hour.

More than 500 people reacted with love, while close to a thousand "liked" the clip.

"Oh my goodness that is making me hungry. I'm going to Greggs now to buy a sausage roll," one fan replied.

But it wasn't just the sausage rolls people were missing as the chain started serving customers again.

"Haven't had a coffee in 3 months as your latte is the only one I can drink," another replied.

Saucier than Netflix, according to some (Facebook)

Even staff at the baker were excited by the prospect of reopening.

"I have just been to get mine miss them so much and I work for Greggs buzzing we are getting open again," one wrote in reply to the video.

And some people were even a little hot under the collar having watched the raw pastries rise and turn golden brown.

One person commenting: "People going on about how that new film on Netflix is saucy.... this beats it hands down..."

Soon.... Soon you will be mine! (Facebook)

Others watched it despite having already scoffed their Greggs, having visited that morning.

"Just eaten a sausage roll. Got a sarnie for this afternoon," one wrote.

Another added: "Already had my Greggs breakfast this morning."

Greggs reopened 800 of its 2,000 stores on Thurday morning, with the rest set to follow in a couple of weeks.

While there weren't pictures of massive queues forming, as happened with McDonald's and KFC drive-thus, it's fair to say people were at least as excited.

"What a day to be alive. Greggs is back," Jay posted on Twitter.

Shan Smith added: "Greggs and a cuppa this morning, life is great :)"

Sean tweeted: "Had a Greggs breakfast this morning. Was a wee bit emotional tbh"

Taylor seemed to agree, tweeting: "Yesss my Greggs is reopening!"

In fact, there was only one thing people seemed sad about - that the corned beef pasty didn't make it onto the revised menu.

Louise tweeted: "Sorry but I’m livid that Greggs aren’t doing a corned beef pasty."

Lauren added: "Just want a corned beef pasty from Greggs :( twelve to be precise."

Shania agreed: "I love a steak bake but what are Greggs thinking opening without the corned beef pasty?? Like opening KFC without chicken."

Georgia wrote: "I’m sorry but Greggs why are you not doing a Corned Beef Pasty?!?! I’ve been really looking forward to one. I don’t see why it’s not on the "reduced menu'. What is the point?"

Greggs replied: "We're sorry Georgia. Hopefully you'll be able to get your fix soon."

It also pointed out to others they sell more than one thing.

"Please don't be sad. We have a selection of other tasty treats which we hope you'll give a try," the chain tweeted.

But things will be a little different inside.

Greggs chief executive Roger Whiteside   said: “The health and safety of our colleagues and customers is our priority and for this reason we have put in the time and effort to make a thorough assessment of all shops,"

"Although we will open with a reduced range, this will be a significant step in us helping the nation get back up and running and serving the communities that we operate in."

Changes in store include:

  • Floor markings and signage to help customers maintain social distancing
  • Protective screens at our counters
  • Availability of protective workwear for our teams
  • Additional, more frequent, cleaning measures
  • Availability of hand sanitiser
  • Encouragement of contactless card payment
