Thousands of fans on the street, wild parties and fights but ONLY eight arrests in Greater Manchester

There were eight arrests linked to England's defeat in the Euro 2020 final last night, police have said.

Thousands of fans gathered in the street and in pubs and bars across Greater Manchester to watch the eagerly-anticipated match which kicked off at 8pm.

England eventually lost to Italy after a dramatic encounter that went to extra-time and penalties.

There were large crowds in many parts of the region including in public areas of Manchester city centre.

There were scuffles outside Manchester Crown Court where hundreds gathered to watch the game on a big screen in a nearby pub.

There were only eight arrests related to the football, GMP said (ASP)

Police were also on hand in Stevenson Square in the Northern Quarter until the early hours.

City centre spokesperson for the council Pat Karney said last night: “I’m watching the news updates on the Manchester Evening News and our major priority is to keep people safe.

"But there has been some ridiculous things going on with big speakers and broken bottles and rubbish around so it could end with some problems.

"We’re pleading with fans to enjoy the moment and enjoy the success so far but let's not let it deteriorate and let Manchester down."

Today GMP say eight arrests related to the football were made in total, although the force was unable to give any more details on where and when the arrests took place.

GMP Traffic cops tweeted an image of a car stopped by officers after the game.

"This driver had been watching the football and drinking copious amounts of alcohol," officers tweeted.

"Decided he’d drive home, whilst drunk, in his uninsured car. Driver arrested & vehicle seized by XT58.

"Provided evidential sample of 40 in custody and charged with all offences."

Police are also investigating after a mural of Marcus Rashford was defaced in Withington.

The incident is being treated as racially aggravated criminal damage.
