Thousands of East Lothian keyworkers and care home residents spoiled with Easter surprise

Kindhearted East Lothian locals brought thousands of easter eggs to care homes, hospitals, hospices, and respite facilities for people with special support needs this weekend.

Lee Stewart, who has been the funeral director of Co-op Funeralcare in Tranent for 15 years organised the event, reaching out to a number of businesses in the area asking them to donate eggs

She told Edinburgh Live that she was blown away by generosity after a whopping 2,800 eggs were donated and delivered to key workers, hospital patients, care home residents and other vulnerable people in the local authority area.

There were also eggs left over which were sold today in Haddington raising an impressive £920 to help support a dementia garden in Tranent.

Lee Stewart told Edinburgh Live: "Because of lockdown many people have been isolated with no visitors so we just wanted to put a smile on people's faces.

"I reached out to businesses who were so generous donating both eggs and cash and then we delivered them to every care home in East Lothian as well as local hospitals, hospices, day centres and a special needs play scheme.

"It took two days between Thursday and Friday and my sister was dressed as an Easter Bunny so she would stand at the window of care homes to get photos taken with residents.

“All of the nurses and patients were totally over the moon and we had a local woman named Grace Hogan bake truffles and deliver them to nursing stations."
