Thousands of Derry homes and businesses hit by power outages

Thousands of homes and businesses are currently affected by a power cut across Derry.

Outages have been reported across the city, with over 2800 homes reportedly affected in the Brandywell, Creggan, Bogside and Bishop Street areas.

It's also understood that several businesses have closed their doors due to the outage, with a fix not expected until later this evening.

Northern Ireland Electricity said that a team of engineers is currently on its way to resolve the issue. It's not understood how the power cut occurred at this stage.

A spokesperson said: "We are aware of a power cut in the BT48 area. A team of engineers are on their way and power will be restored as soon as possible. Keep an eye on the power check website for updates."

Meanwhile, Sinn Fein councillor Emma McGinley said: "Reports of power outage across Creggan, Bishop Street and surrounding areas.

"I've just spoken with NIE and they have engineers dispatched. This has been reported to NIE and the estimated time for getting it back on is 5.30pm but hopefully will be restored sooner. I have asked them to give me updates and will put updates here when I have them."
