Thousands of customers hit with payment delays because of European Bank Holiday

Thousands of customers have been hit with banking delays across Ireland due to May Day.

May Day, taking place on May 1, is considered a Bank Holiday in many parts of Europe.

As a result, there are delays to payments in and out of Irish bank accounts.

Irish banks have taken to re-assure customers this morning that payments will be processed today as banks get back to normal across the continent.

Thousands of customers have been affected due to the delays, as wage and social welfare payments were stopped.

Ulster Bank said: "Wednesday, 1 May 2019, is a European Bank Holiday. This means it will not be possible to make or receive EUR payments to or from other banks on this day. Your available funds on 1 May, may also include amounts which, due to the European Payment Holiday, are not actually due for value until Thursday, 2May. Should you make payments using these available funds on, Wednesday, 1 May, there is a risk you may go overdrawn and incur fees or charges."

Permanent TSB told customers: "Following the European Bank Holiday on May 1st, all credits due today May 2nd should reach customers' accounts by mid-morning."

While Bank of Ireland added: "Please be advised that Wednesday May 1st is a European bank holiday and as such no electronic euro payments can be made between Banks on that day. SEPA Direct Debits will not be processed on Wednesday May 1st. They will be processed on Thursday May 2nd after all credits have been successfully applied to customer accounts."

And AIB said: "Please allow more time for your payments to reach the receiving bank. Payments due into your account from other Banks on Wednesday 1 May 2019 may not be credited to your account until Thursday 2 May 2019. International Payments (Standard & Urgent) Please allow at least one extra business day for your payment to reach the receiving bank.Urgent Payments will not be processed on Wednesday 1 May 2019. Direct debits due to leave your account on Wednesday 1 May 2019 will not be debited until Thursday 2 May 2019."
