Thousands of children dress up as their favourite characters for World Book Day

Children across the country have donned fancy dress today, March 4, to celebrate World Book Day.

Schools in Nottinghamshire will be among those taking part as their pupils turn into the likes of Harry Potter, Peter Pan and Peter Rabbit.

Taking inspiration from their most beloved stories, kids will dress up for what is normally a fun-filled school day today.

This year, as school's are not open again until March 8, pupils will celebrate the day at home - many on online calls to their classes.

The theme is "share a story", encouraging children to share a story with the people they live with and to get them reading.

The World Book Day charity has listed some fun activities to try at home, including a World Book Day Scavenger Hunt.

Their website reads: "We’ve partnered with Twinkl to help everyone discover their love of reading. We have a choice of activities to help demonstrate the joy reading can bring.

"Dive into a book scavenger hunt and try to find specific words or items from stories you have at home or in class. Check out our resource page to find these next week".

Children will still be able to claim their £1 book tokens, even in lockdown, as World Book Day organisers "continue to work with schools and nurseries to distribute the £1 book tokens" in a new digital version, that can be shown on a device to bookstore owners or printed at home.
