Thousands of Brits jet off to Portugal on first flights out UK as lockdown eases

Thousands of British holidaymakers are jetting off to Portugal today after both the UK Government and Scottish Government put it on their "green list" for travel.

Nicola Sturgeon delivered an important update for Scottish holidaymakers last week as she confirmed blanket restrictions on non-essential international travel would be lifted from today.

A traffic light system for travel abroad is now in place in the UK, with green, amber and red list countries - and Portugal is among the quarantine-free destinations.

After some uncertainty, Portugal also confirmed on Friday it was opening its borders to UK holidaymakers despite their lockdown measures that are in place.

Desperate sun-seekers began booking flights to swap our wet and miserable May for blue skies, golden beaches and a temperature of 27C, reports the Mirror.

Scots returning from Portugal will not need to quarantine after travelling back from a 'green' country, though you must take a PCR test shortly after arrival.

An estimated 5,000 Brits are heading for the country every day this week, with one newlywed couple heading to Portugal on one of the first planes to leave the tarmac telling the Mirror they were desperate for a honeymoon.

Camilla and Calum McNally had cancelled an earlier honeymoon to Greece and booked flights to Portugal as soon as the UK government gave the go-ahead.

Civil servant Calum, 23, said: “We were desperate to have a honeymoon.

“We are pretty excited. We want to relax and have some good food by the pool. I feel a lot of people are wanting to do that and we feel very lucky to be able to do that today.”

The flight's first passengers in the check-in queue at 3am were Louis Myers, 23 and Elle McLaughlin, 23, together with their 18-month-old son Kruz.

The couple from Manchester had booked a one-week holiday to Vilamoura.

“We can’t wait to getaway. We think we deserve after what has been such a horrible year for everyone” said mum Elle.

“This is Kruz’s first time on a plane. We are so excited", she added.

In response to the demand for getaways, airlines have been adding more and more flights to their lists.

Jet2 and Jet2Holidays report that they’ve seen more than a 600% increase in bookings to Faro and Madeira since the green list announcement.

Edinburgh Airport will see new weekly services to Faro (Algarve) every Tuesday from June 29 up to the August 31. This will give Scots a good five weeks to choose from.
