Thousands of birds captured swooping over Nottinghamshire nature reserve

Thousands of birds have been seen flying over a Nottinghamshire nature reserve in a stunning display.

The murmuration is a mass aerial stunt according to the RSPB - where thousands of birds all swoop and dive in unison.

They say starlings do it for safety in numbers, as predators such as peregrine falcons find it hard to target one bird in a flock of thousands.

Mark Glover, Chair of The Gedling Conservation Trust, a local charity which owns and manages the site, said: "One of nature’s great spectacles is currently taking place at the Netherfield Lagoons – Gedling’s most important site for wildlife and a designated Local Nature Reserve.

"More than 10,000 starlings can be seen each evening taking part in beautiful, complex murmurations.

"This is a really fantastic opportunity to see this incredible, seasonal, display. Visitors are welcome but must observe Covid safety guidelines and dogs must be kept on leads."
