Thousands of bees swarm on wall of Merseyside Asda

Staff and shoppers at a Merseyside Asda were left in "shock" and "awe" as they spotted "thousands" of bees attached to one of the walls of the building.

In the early hours of this morning, Julie Murray arrived to Asda in Bootle to find a huge proportion of one of the shops outside walls covered in honeybees.

Julie said she and others were "in awe" witnessing the size of the hive and said the Asda team put a shield around and had security check up on it regularly to make sure the bees were not disturbed.

In images and video shared with the ECHO, thousands of bees can be seen gathered together and then later removed professionally.

Julie told the ECHO: "I went to work this morning, I start working at 3am and they just started to form.

"I think they may have been disturbed by work on the railway and the Queen's flew out and all the others just followed.

"We went to look and found they were honey bees, but at first we thought they were wasps.

"It was shock. We were all a bit shocked but when we realised they were all honeybees, they're quite calm and we're aware they're a primitive species and they're not vicious unless you poke or disturb them."

"We were shocked but we were in awe watching them because it was such a big hive. There was loads of them - thousands.

"It's actually a quite big wall and it's hard to see the size of it, but it was really really massive. It was amazing to see."

The bees were spotted on the wall at the side of the shop by the fire exit, opposite the garage.

Julie said Asda's community service colleague Collette rang around to make sure the bees where collected professionally and a local bee keeper later arrived and removed them all safely.
