Thousands of BBC viewers want new drama to be axed

A petition calling for a new BBC drama about Grenfell Tower to be pulled has racked up hundreds of signatures.

More than 2000 furious responses have been left on Change.org after plans for a new BBC show were unveiled last month.

The petition reads: "We don’t want the BBC to make a drama about the Grenfell fire tragedy. It has been less than six years since the fire that took 72 innocent lives and left hundreds more people displaced grieving without any justice.

"Many people are still suffering from PTSD and many cannot even return to their old neighbourhood because of the trauma they experienced that night. There are still survivors waiting for a permanent home.

"In spite of all of this, the BBC has decided that they wish to recreate the brutal events for their own entertainment purposes, claiming under the guise that they will spread awareness with the permission of the residents and survivors."

The petition is said to have been created by one of the residents of Lancaster West Estate. The person goes on to state: "I have never been contacted by the BBC, nor did they respect the wishes of the survivors who had been contacted a few years ago and were deeply offended by the proposal of such a drama show.

"It makes me sick to my stomach that the most disturbing and traumatic night of our lives will be made into a tv show that people across the country will watch from the comforts of their homes with a cup of tea. This is not a fictional story, these are real events affecting real people."

Among the thousands of signatures on the petition, one woman said: "Tragedy is not entertainment", while another said: "I am from Grenfell Tower and the thought of them doing this makes me cry".

A third said: "I am horrified by what I have heard about the nature of the planned programme".

A BBC Spokesperson told the ECHO: “We are extremely mindful of the impact that a project of this nature can have on those whose lives have been personally affected, and this programme will be made with the utmost sensitivity and respect.

"It will draw on over five years of research to ask not only how this terrible tragedy was able to occur, but also what we can learn to ensure that the events at Grenfell can never happen again elsewhere.”
