Thousands of Barcelona members sign motion of censure against Josep Maria Bartomeu after Lionel Messi saga

More than 7,500 Barcelona members have signed a censure motion aiming to oust president Josep Maria Bartomeu following the saga which almost saw Lionel Messi leave the Catalan club.

Bartomeu brought forward the next presidential elections to March after Barcelona's disastrous 8-2 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League last month, but saw the club plunged into even greater chaos as Messi asked to be transferred this summer.

The Argentine eventually announced he would be staying at Camp Nou, at least until his contract expires next summer, but Barca members have launched the motion of censure in an attempt to remove Bartomeu.

In order for the no-confidence vote in the board to prosper, 16,500 handwritten signatures from around 140,000 Barcelona members eligible to take part are needed and there are only seven days left.

A list of locations where members (socis) are able to sign can be found on the Més que una Moció website, although almost all of those are in Catalonia, meaning most overseas members will be unable to participate.

Presidential candidates Victor Font and Joan Laporta have both signed, along with former Barca kitman Txema Corbella, who was dismissed in 2014 after 32 years at the Catalan club.

With just seven days remaining, Friday's Diada (Catalonia's national day) and Saturday's match between Barca and Nastic Tarragona will be key to generating greater interest in the censure motion.

If the 16,500 signatures are secured, a vote will take place to decide whether Bartomeu stays or goes, with 66 per cent needed to be against the current president in order to remove him immediately from the role.
