Thousands of cricket fans could be hit by a rail strike affecting First Great Western trains serving Cardiff during the first three days of the first Ashes Test. Talks will be held on Monday in a final attempt to avert the strike due to start at 6.30pm on Wednesday evening, the opening day of the Test at the Swalec Stadium.

The RMT union is in dispute with First Great Western over new trains. Its members are planning to strike for 48 hours followed by an overtime ban through to one minute before midnight on Saturday.

One-third of the 16,000 spectators will stay in hotels, but those travelling to Cardiff from London, south-west England or west Wales would be affected. FGWs say it will badly disrupt services rather than cancel them all. National Express has said it will lay on extra seats if the dispute goes ahead.
