Thousands of Aldi staff are getting a pay rise

Aldi is set to increase its pay for staff in stores by just over 3 per cent - making it one of the best paying supermarkets in the UK.

The changes to wages will come into force from February 1, but the increase workers receive will depend on where they work in the UK and how long they have been with the German discounter.

Aldi also pointed out that it is one of few supermarkets to pay staff during breaks.

How wages will change

Minimum hourly rates will rise by 3 per cent from £9.10 an hour to £9.40 for shop workers outside of London's M25.

And those who have been with the business for three years or more will see their pay rise to £10.41 an hour.

Workers inside the M25 will receive £10.90 an hour instead of £10.55.

While employees in London with two years' service will earn £11.15 - a rise of 2 per cent from £10.89.

Management and head office staff are on different pay rates but Aldi has confirmed they too will get a pay rise as part of this process.

The new hourly rates exceed the Government's National Living Wage, which is £8.21 for workers aged 25 and over.

They are also higher than the Living Wage Foundation's recommended pay rates, although Aldi is not a member of the organisation - which also requires companies to agree to a series of staff well-being levels.

The retailer also said it will be recruiting more than 3,800 store-level positions across the UK this year.

Giles Hurley, chief executive of Aldi UK, said: "We have the most efficient and productive workforce, and this is why they earn the highest rates of pay in the grocery sector."

Aldi currently has 874 stores in the UK and said it remains on track to achieve its long-term target of 1,200 UK stores by 2025.
