Thousands march in Dublin and Cork in homelessness protest

Thousands of people have taken to the streets of Dublin and Cork for a major protest over homelessness.

The protest was organised over social media - including through a Facebook group called 'Protest Against Homelessness in Ireland, Less Talk More Action', which has over 66,000 members.

Government figures out this week showed that a new record of 10,514 homeless people was reported at the end of October 2019 - a crisis that shows no signs of abating.

The number includes 3,826 kids and is an overall increase of 8.1% on October 2018, when the figure was 9,724.

Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy then narrowly survived a motion of no confidence in the Dail on Tuesday, by 56 votes to 53, mostly thanks to Fianna Fail abstaining.

In Dublin today, protesters met at the Garden Of Remembrance at 12pm before marching at 1pm down O'Connell Street and through the city centre to Merrion Square.

Some short speeches are due to take place this afternoon.

Gardai said there were "minor" traffic delays in Dublin due to the protest.

Cork North Central Solidarity-People Before Profit TD Mick Barry tweeted out a picture of the event in Dublin and claimed thousands were attending.
