Thousands left without water across Cardiff and Penarth after pipe bursts

Thousands of people in Cardiff and Penarth are without water due to a burst pipe. Trouble with the water supply was first reported early on Friday morning, at around 5am, with thousands of homes set to be completely without water throughout the morning.

Those living in postcodes CF64 and CF11 have been affected. This includes residents of Penarth, Llandough and parts of Grangetown. Get the latest news from Cardiff sent straight to your inbox for free by signing up to our newsletters.

Welsh Water has confirmed that it is dealing with the burst water main and has advised that residents may not have their water fully restored until later this morning. The Welsh Water website says people in the affected areas might experience low or no supply, and has asked those with water to run their cold tap to clear any discolouration before using their water.

An alert on the website reads: "We're aware of a burst on our network which is affecting the water supply to this area. Until the pipe is fixed, you may experience low pressure or no water.

"We expect all supplies to be fully restored later this morning. As a general rule. it should take about five seconds to fill a pint glass from the cold water tap in your kitchen. If you can run your cold kitchen tap, this will also help to clear any discolouration in your supply."

The alert adds that the estimated "completion" time is midday on Friday. It comes as large parts of Wales are officially in a state of drought from today (Friday, August 19). Natural Resources Wales (NRW) confirmed that the thresholds have been met to enter drought status in several areas of south-west Wales following an extended period of dry weather and high temperatures.

Meanwhile, Dwr Cymru Welsh Water has announced a hosepipe ban for more 60,000 households served by Llys y Fran reservoir in Pembrokeshire. It will come into force for people in Pembrokeshire and a small adjoining part of Carmarthenshire from 8am on Friday.
