Thousands left without power after lightning strike in south of Ireland amid Met Eireann yellow weather warning

Thousands of people have been left without power across several counties as lightning strikes hit Ireland this afternoon.

ESB customers were left without electricity following the weather event in the southeast on Saturday.

RTE reports many outages were in south Co Wexford and parts of Kilkenny and Carlow were also affected. It appears those faults have now been fixed.

Parts of Bealistown in Co Waterford also went black, with around 1,000 affected there, while nearly 1,000 people in Bishopstown in Cork city were also hit with a fault near the GAA club.

A horse racing meeting Gowran Park in Co Kilkenny had to be called off due to the weather, as a yellow warning was put in place by Met Eireann today.

14 counties are covered by the warning, which includes the whole of Leinster and is in effect until 3am on Sunday.

If your area is without power, check your neighbours are also without electricity and/or your street lighting is not working.

In either case, call the ESB on 1850 372 999 to report a service interruption and quote your MPRN number if possible to narrow down the area.
