Thousands in Merseyside sign viral petition to revoke Article 50 and remain in EU

Thousands of people in Merseyside have signed a viral petition to scrap Brexit.

Over 2,000,000 people across the UK, at the time of writing, have pledged their support for the petition since it was created with almost 20,000 of those signatures coming from Merseyside.

The petition calls for Article 50 to be revoked and for the UK to stay in the European Union, essentially scrapping Brexit all together.

The petition states: "The government repeatedly claims exiting the EU is 'the will of the people'.

"We need to put a stop to this claim by proving the strength of public support now, for remaining in the EU.

"A People's Vote may not happen - so vote now."

Often classed as the safest Labour seat in the country, Liverpool Riverside is also now one of the constituencies in the UK where the highest number of signatures have been pledged to the petition.

The petition map shows that 3,700 people have signed in support of revoking Article 50, more than 3% of the area's population.

The volume and speed of signatures is believed to have crashed the UK Petitions website numerous times throughout the day, forcing the Petitions Committee to rearrange the site.

Shortly before 10am it tweeted: "We're very sorry that the site is still experiencing problems.

"We are working urgently to get it back up and running as soon as possible."

An hour later it said: "As many of you have guessed, the number of people using the site has caused problems this morning. It's a mix of people reloading the front page to watch the signature count go up and people trying to sign petitions.

Later in the day however it announced that the rate of signing of the Revoke Article 50 petition is the highest it has ever had.

A tweet stated: "The rate of signing is the highest the site has ever had to deal with and we have had to make some changes to ensure the site remains stable and open for signatures and new petitions.

"Thanks for bearing with us."

Another tweet confirmed that at any time throughout today, between 80,000 and 100,000 people have been looking at the petition to revoke article 50.

Nearly 2,000 people are signing it every minute.

Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson has even personally shared the petition on Twitter.

He said: "Almost three years on we have a deal that’s worse than we have now, with no way of improving it, we need to Revoke Article 50 now, only way to end the chaos and prevent further damage to the UK."

If a petition gains more than 10,000 signatures the government will respond in writing and if it gains more than 100,000 signatures it will be considered for debtate.
