Thousands gather for London's annual New Year's Day Parade

Thousands of Londoners have gathered in central London to watch the annual New Year’s Day Parade.

The 33rd year of London’s New Year’s Day Parade (LNYDP) saw 8,000 performers from all over the world taking part and raising money for mayoral charities across the city.

The event started at noon on Piccadilly, near Green Park Station, before heading into Piccadilly Circus and turning right down Regent Street St. James's, left along Pall Mall, through Trafalgar Square and Whitehall, and finishing at Parliament Square at 3.30pm.

In a message posted on the LNYDP website, Mayor Sadiq Khan said: "There really is no better place to welcome in the New Year than London.

"From the world's greatest fireworks show on New Year's Eve, to the fun-filled New Year's Day Parade and Festival, our capital will be celebrating our unity and diversity as we again show the world that London is open to all."

Among those to perform at this year’s parade was reality TV star Megan Mckenna, All the Queen’s Horses and City of London Brass Band.

Entertainment from different musical activities, such as Cheerleading and marching bands, was also on offer.

Each year the parade attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators, while many watch the proceedings live on television.

The parade first took place in 1987 and involved 2,000 performers, and was originally called the Lord Mayor of Westminster’s Big Parade.
