Thousands forced to flee as huge wildfires rip through California

Thousands of residents have been ordered to evacuate as wildfires raged through rural Northern California.

A fire that broke out on Saturday near Clearlake Oaks, 100 miles north of San Francisco, threatened hundreds of properties.

About 3,000 people were ordered to leave their homes in the Spring Valley area.

The outbreaks were north of the wine country region where wildfires killed 44 last October.

"What we're stressing is that people, when they get the evacuation order, they heed it immediately and get out and stay out until it is safe to return," said state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Battalion chief Jonathan Cox.

"This is one of four large fires burning in northern California. It's a good reminder that fire season is upon us."
