Thousands flout rules at packed market on first weekend of new lockdown restrictions

Thousands of people flouted new lockdown ruled as they were seen assembling in London's Broadway Market on Saturday.

Shocking pictures show Londoners taking to the market and packing the streets as they waited for drinks outside street food restaurants and pubs.

People took advantage of pubs being able to stay open for takeaway alcohol, a concession by Prime Minister Boris Johnson after he announced a second lockdown last week.

Mr Johnson last Saturday announced the second four-week lockdown as he warned of an alarming rise in Covid-19 infections.

The tougher restrictions, which will last till December 2, were decided on as the head of the NHS said plans were being drawn up to use ice rinks as mortuaries if hospitals became overwhelmed.

Under the restrictions, all non-essential shops, pubs and restaurants have been forced to close.

And while the government has indeed allowed for some people to access their support bubbles, it called on the wider public to stay at home and only leave for specific reasons such as work or and education.

It comes as the coronavirus situations in the UK worsens, with the death toll up by 413 on Saturday - the highest number of deaths recorded on a Saturday since the first wave in May.

Today's pictures recall scenes from Wednesday night, when revellers were seen packing out their local pubs as they made the most of their last night out before lockdown kicked in.
