Thousands celebrate Manchester's Caribbean culture at the popular parade and carnival

Manchester's Caribbean culture was celebrated in style as the annual carnival made a welcome return to Alexandra Park and its surrounding streets.

The two-day event across Whalley Range and Moss Side, the largest in the north west, features music, food and drink, a family funfair - and a party atmosphere.

The first Caribbean Carnival took place on the streets of Moss Side in 1972.

After four decades, the popular event has evolved into one of the biggest highlights of the Manchester summer calendar.

Despite the wind and rain, the popular procession went ahead on Saturday alongside music, dance, costumes and traditional food from the Caribbean islands.

The colourful parade was made up of hundreds of participants, many of them wearing elaborate Mas costumes decorated with feathers and sequins, dancing to the sounds of steel bands, soca bands and DJs.

This year the route took the procession on a circuit along Alexandra Road, Moss Lane East, Upper Lloyd Street and Claremont Road.

The fun continued at Alexandra Park today - Sunday - with a line up of soca bands and dancehall reggae artists, underpinned by soca and bashment DJs.

There was also a funfair with 20 rides to take a spin on, as well as games, stalls, inflatables, a soft play centre, and fairground food and drink.
