Thousands celebrate as Stockport County win first league title in 52 years

Stockport County have won their first league title in 52 years, watched by thousands of their fans who travelled to Warwickshire to see history being made.

The Hatters clinched promotion and the National League North title with a 3-0 win at Nuneaton, in front of a stadium record crowd made up mainly of 4,000 County fans who'd made the trip.

Amid joyous scenes, they invaded the pitch at full-time to join the players and manager Jim Gannon in celebration.

The triumph means an end to County's stay in the sixth tier of English football, where they've been for the last six years - they were one tier below the Premier League as recently as 2002 and have also endured going into administration.

Stockport's large, loyal and long-suffering fanbase now hope it's a beginning of a return to the Football League - next season they'll be just one step away from that when they compete in the National League.
