Thoughtful Wishaw man is on a mission to tidy up the town

A Wishaw man is on a mission to clean up the town.

John Smillie, of Coltness, has been scouring the streets of Wishaw picking up hundreds of plastic and glass bottles found dumped on the roads, streets and in the woodlands.

Last week John spent two hours litter picking at the silver gates at St Aidan’s Primary School and the hidden valley at Denholm Drive.

He managed to fill eight bags of recyclable items, which he then left next to an already overflowing bin.

John said: “The rubbish left lying about is so harmful.

“Would you like your family pet to be cut with broken glass?

“Think of the consequences.

“It’s harmful to the wildlife.”

John hopes the new 20p charge on glass and cans set to be introduced by the Scottish Government by 2021 might help to reduce the blight of littering in the town.

He added: “It’s the cheap fortified wine like Buckfast and Eldorado that’s the main problem as the smashed glass is very harmful.

“Why can’t there be a higher environmental tax on these bottles to stop all the damage to the countryside?”

By cleaning up the area, John hopes that the green space can be used by local nurseries and schools to educate children that the woods are a great learning resource.

He is also encouraging people to take broken slabs and similar to the recycling centre in Netherton.
