A group of thoughtful primary school pupils have launched a new way of supporting families struggling with the cost of living while helping the environment.
P6 and P7 pupils from Toronto Primary School in Howden have been working together to think about ways they can help the environment and reduce the cost of the school day for their school community.
They decided that they would like to open a school shop where pupils can donate and receive pre-loved items of school uniforms, footwear and PE kits completely free of charge.
They used their creativity and problem solving skills to organise and design a shop layout and they were given a budget to buy resources.
The shop stocks polo shirts, jumpers, hoodies, trousers, skirts, jackets, PE kits and footwear and the children have designed a logo, labels and a beautiful shop window.
The shop is open from Monday to Thursday and pupils are free to go along and receive any items of school uniform that they need.
Head teacher Laura Harkins said: “The children are committed to looking after the environment and making a difference to the lives of the families within the school community.
“The project was led by P6 and P7 pupils, supported by Mrs Wynne. The shop was officially opened by Mrs McMurray who has just retired from her admin assistant post in the school.
“The children invited her to open the Boutique because she was always very stylish. Mrs McMurray was delighted to come back and open the Boutique and she hopes that all the children wear their new clothes with pride and feel fabulous!”
