Thoughtful Paisley schoolboy clears 20 bags of rubbish from his neighbourhood

A thoughtful youngster rolled up his sleeves and spent hours clearing 20 bags of rubbish to help clean up the streets in his neighbourhood.

Zach Gilmour collected the bags of rubbish from an area close to his former nursery, in Paisley, after spotting the litter while out on a walk with his grandfather Tony Green.

The St Paul’s Primary pupil got to work alongside Tony to give the area a remarkable makeover in just a few hours.

Zach, five, was inspired by Tony and his wife Suzanne - who had taken part in a Renfrewshire Council Team Up to Clean Up event the week before.

Tony said he was delighted when his young grandson said he wanted to do his own litter pick.

With the help of Nicola Drummond, lead officer for environment coordination at Renfrewshire Council, the pair were kitted out with the equipment to get the job done.

Proud granddad Tony told the Express: “Zach knew we had taken part in a litter pick event the week before.

“When he saw all the litter near his old nursery, he said ‘Do you think we could clear all that rubbish?’

“So it was all his idea to do it there. I just helped him get the tools to do it.

“There was a lot of rubbish to clear and we managed to fill 20 bags. It was fantastic and he was really pleased.

“He got a real kick out of it and I’m really proud of him as he worked really hard.”

It took Tony and Zach two hours to clear the grass parks near Foxlea Nursery, in Tweed Avenue and Almond Crescent, and Tony even bought Zach a special litter picker for the job.

The pair couldn’t believe the transformation once it was complete.

Their hard work is already gaining praise from local residents, and more than 2,000 people have responded to Tony’s post on social media, praising the youngster for his hard work.

He said Zach wants to keep going back to the area to make sure it is kept clean, adding: “The difference in the area was
fantastic.

“Zach says he wants to keep his eye out for the area and come back and clean it again so it stays nice.

“I think it’s really important for kids to be aware of things like this and take part in keeping their community clean and have some pride in the area they live.”
