Thoughtful crafters donate handmade items to hospital baby unit

Crafters across Renfrewshire have had their knitting needles at the ready to help create clothes for tiny babies thanks to a project by a Renfrew wool shop.

The Hidden Wool Shop, which is located in the town’s Canal Street, launched the Nifty Crafters Club in May this year with the hope of creating a community of crafters in the area.

The club - which has its own Facebook group - proved to be such a hit that members decided to put their skills to use and make garments for baby’s in hospital.

Now, six knitters and crocheters have more than 70 items including blankets, cardigans and hats which they will be donating to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

The wool shop was started by shop owner David Shan 26 years ago, and it featured a small section of wool in their long-standing card and gift store.

Over the years, the collection grew and it has now become a secret treasure trove for crocheters and knitters.

And David is delighted to be bringing crafters together with the success of the club so far.

He set it up alongside colleague and knitting enthusiast Jane Stickley-Woods.

David, 52, said: “A lot of people have been knitting and crocheting throughout lockdown and when we had some people on board we decided to contact the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital to see if they would take the donations.

“We have six people who have been making the garments and it is really a lovely cause.

“And I think it has kept a lot of people going during a difficult time too which is great.”

The Nifty Crafters are looking for more people to join the club and carry on their efforts to make even more items for babies in the neonatal unit.

The Hidden Wool Shop is willing to provide free yarn to anyone who would like to make something for the cause.

David added: “We are still putting a call out for anyone who would like to join the club.

“If anyone wants to take part they can contact us and we would be happy to provide them with some free yarn to get them started.”
