Paramount is to develop a remake of the biblical epic The Ten Commandments, in a hope to provide a different take on the well-known tale.
According to The Tracking Board, the studio is in the initial stages of creating a new version of the 1956 film, which starred Charlton Heston as Moses and Yul Bryner as Rameses. The project will be produced by Mary Parent and Cale Boyter. Parent’s credits include Darren Aronofsky’s Noah while the pair have both produced The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.
The film will follow the story of Moses as he frees the Jewish people from the tyrannical rule of Rameses. Last year, Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings also centred on these characters and despite negative reviews and casting controversy, it was still a global hit, making $268m worldwide.
Similarly last year, Noah also made its way to a $362m total. Both films were domestic disappointments but made impressive money outside of the US.
The remake is without any confirmed cast or crew yet but Paramount is reportedly searching for a team who can provide a unique take on the story.
The 1956 film, directed by Cecil B DeMille, was the second highest-grossing film of the decade and was nominated for seven Oscars, winning one for best visual effects.
