‘Thorough investigation’ after bus burst in flames on A-road

First Bus is launching a “thorough investigation” after one of its buses burst into flames on a busy A-road.

The X1, which serves Weston-super-Mare from Bristol, set alight on the A370 Long Ashton bypass on Wednesday (July 7) shortly before 2pm.

The incident caused delays into Bristol and public transport was diverted.

The blaze took several hours to put out, with three fire crews attending the scene.

Heavy smoke could be seen for miles with traffic being urged to avoid the area.

The road remained closed throughout the night for resurfacing.

Thankfully no one was injured, as passengers were transferred onto a replacement vehicle before the bus went up in flames.

Simon Ford, Commercial Manager of First West of England, said: “A fire broke out on one of our vehicles on the X1 service on the Long Ashton bypass earlier this afternoon.

“The driver and all customers are safe and uninjured and passengers were transferred onto a replacement vehicle.

“There will be a thorough investigation as to the cause.”

A North Somerset Council spokesperson said: "Resurfacing works are expected to take place in the next few hours with the road being reopened in the late hours of this evening (July 7)."
