'Thorough gentleman' dies from coronavirus after Caribbean cruise

Tributes have been paid to a "thorough gentleman" who died from coronavirus after returning from a cruise in the Caribbean.

Bruce Hammond, a retired pharmacist and proud member of the Rotary Club of Aireborough, died at the age of 89 on April 6.

Mr Hammond and his wife Angela both tested positive for Covid-19 after returning from Cuba.

Manoj Joshi, rotary district governor, said: "I am shocked to receive the distressing news of Rotarian Bruce Hammond’s untimely death.

"Bruce and Angela had difficulty in being able to leave a cruise ship early, not succeeding until docking in Cuba.

"On returning home Angela went into hospital with Covid-19, recovered and came home.

"Bruce followed her into hospital, was able to be visited by a now immune Angela but did not survive.

"He will be very sadly missed by us all."

Mr Hammond owned pharmacies in Guiseley and Headingley, before he sold his shop to Boots and retired.

He joined the Rotary Club of Aireborough in 1980s and has been described as "a thorough gentleman and a compassionate Rotarian".

There are now 893 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Leeds and 124 people have died in the city after contracting the virus.
