Thorntons chocolate shop in Bolton could close

A popular chocolate shop in Bolton could be about to close as bosses discuss its future.

Thorntons, on Market Street, has been highlighted as one of a number of branches which could be in danger of closure across the country.

It comes as businesses across Bolton town centre are being hit hard by the ongoing impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

A spokesperson for Thorntons said the company could not say for certain that the store was going to shut but confirmed it was at risk.

"We can confirm that this store is under consideration for closure, but cannot provide further details as we are in a live consultation," the firm said in a statement.

"We are committed to transforming and growing the iconic Thorntons brand and continue to implement our strategic plan.

"As a business that has been part of the UK retail footprint for over a century, we continuously review our store estate, store locations and our infrastructure to ensure it is fit for current and future customers."

Another key town centre store, Debenham's, is also about to close and is currently in the process of shutting down its location inside the Market Place Shopping Centre.

Meanwhile, all non-essential shops across the town have been forced to close until the lockdown is lifted.
