The 33-year-old managed to drive a short distance to his home address in Roukenburn Street and got out the car, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post mortem examination will take place to establish the exact cause of death, but police are currently treating it as murder and a murder inquiry has been launched.

Detective Chief Inspector Grant Macleod, of the Major Investigation Team (West), said: “I completely understand the local community will be concerned by this incident.

"I would like to stress that everything is being done to catch the person responsible as quickly as possible.

"Extra police patrols are in the area and members of the public are encouraged to speak to a police officer if they have any concerns."

He added: “The team of officers are working to establish a motive for this crime.  They are currently piecing together the victim’s last known movements to find out as much information as possible on the circumstances surrounding this death.

"Officers are carrying out house to house enquiries and gathering CCTV footage from the local area to provide more information that will help us trace the man responsible for this vicious attack.

"Any witnesses, or anyone who holds any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, should contact 101 quoting reference number 4732 of 18th April 2019.  Additionally if anyone who was driving in that area has dash-cam footage then I would ask them to contact us too.

“Understandably Mr Fern’s family are extremely upset and have been left devastated by this murder.  We have specially trained officers providing support to the family and they are keeping them updated on this investigation."
