Thorniewood United cup clash off as 'waterlogged pitch' leads to swimming pool comparison

Thorniewood United's cup clash with Craigroyston was called off today with a corner of Robertson Park resembling a swimming pool.

The SoccerShop Challenge Cup second round tie was already in doubt last night, with a pitch inspection called for this morning.

And when the referee turned up to assess the pitch, it was an easy decision to call the game off with a huge corner of the pitch left flooded.

It even led to the club joking about the crazy scene on Twitter. The club's official account posted: "Referee asking the captain if he would rather shoot towards the shallow or deep end."

Thorniewoood weren't the only Lanarkshire side to fall victim to the weather, as Newmains' clash with Edinburgh Uni was also postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
