Ross Wylie has created more motorsport history for the famous Brabham name.
The Thornhill racer and co-driver Paul Bailey took the first outright race victory for a their Brabham BT62 Competition in the GT Cup at Silverstone at the weekend.
That came on the back of their class success at Snetterton earlier in the season for the Brabham marquee, which was founded by triple F1 world champion Sir Jack Brabham in 1960.
Once again Sir Jack’s son David, who is Brabham Automotive’s sporting director, was on hand to enjoy the latest success.
Bailey started the race from the front row and pitted from third overall during a safety car half way through the race.
Wylie took over, although had to take an additional 20 second success penalty, and he began chasing down the leader with 17 minutes left.
A series of fastest laps saw him challenging for the lead six minutes later and he soon hit the front, leading the final six laps to win by more than 10 seconds.
Unfortunately, the duo were denied the chance to add to their success in the second race due to a technical issue, but the pair will start the next round at Donington in September leading the GTO category.
Wylie said: “Scoring Brabham’s maiden customer outright race win with the BT62 is something very special. Because it was at Silverstone makes it additionally noteworthy for me for a number of reasons. The fact that the race was staged on the grand prix circuit makes it more exceptional as it’s where Jack Brabham himself won the 1960 British Grand Prix while earlier this year I was made a full British Racing Drivers’ Club member and the BRDC is based at the circuit.
“Our victory is a well-deserved reward for everyone at SB Racing, Horsepower Racing, Brabham Automotive and of course car owner and co-driver Paul B himself.”
